Forbes Wild Foods

Toronto

“All our foods are harvested from the Canadian wilderness by trained pickers who practice sustainable harvesting methods – sustainable for that particular plant species, but also sustainable for the pickers, whose livelihood is supported by a thriving source of wild foods, and sustainable for other wildlife. The pickers are usually residents of rural or remote communities who respect the lands that support them. They are Aboriginal people, women, youth, and farmers. Only those wild foods whose survival is not in danger are used.”

Rainy River Elk Farm

Fort Frances

“Rainy River Elk Company is a family farm business operated by Bill Darby and Deb Cornell and their daughters Laura and Shannon. We are located on La Vallee Road North, which is 15 km west of Fort Frances off Hwy 11/71 in NW Ontario. Operating since 1995, we raise 50 elk per year and usually have about 120 elk on the farm. Our elk are on natural grass pastures in summer and fed hay in the winter. We provide a comfortable, natural environment for our elk within fenced paddocks. In 2007 we were a Regional Winner of the Premier’s Award for Agri-Food Innovation Excellence… Elk is a delicious, full-flavoured red meat with a hint of sweetness. It is low in fat and cholesterol – a heart-healthy choice.” Source: http://www.thunderbaycountrymarket.com/

Duffy’s Lane Maple Syrup

Caledon

We have been making maple syrup on a small scale since moving to [Duffys Lane], Caledon a few years ago. Our friends that we shared the syrup with raved about it, so this winter we decided to get a bit more serious and have a new evaporator from Patrick Phaneuf, who makes them just outside Quebec City. Visitors will be welcomed when the sap starts to flow. Normally the season is from about March 21 to April 15 but it is totally weather dependent. We will post notices here when we are starting to make syrup.
On a normal day we start collecting sap from the buckets around noon and start boiling a little later. When the flow hits peak we often need to boil from 7:00 AM till midnight.
We will have syrup for sale in sizes from 50ml to 4L. We will be posting prices here soon, with pictures of the containers. If you would like to reserve some, or come up to visit, please give us a call at 905 – 880 – 7876
We can ship also ship if you can’t come by.”
