That Dutchman’s Farm

Upper Economy

Den Hoek : That Dutchman’s Farm : Producers of Fine Farmstead Cheeses

That Dutchman’s Farm is owned and operated by Maja and Willem van den Hoek, who in 1970 coming from the Netherlands (town of Soest) landed in Canada as newlywed immigrants. Starting their life together in British Columbia, working farms and forest they subsequently moved to Nova Scotia (sort of as “back to the landers”), ending up in Upper Economy, with their family and a thriving cheese-making business.
The cheese Willem produces is a “Farmstead Gouda.” It is a true heritage cheese that has its roots in the Netherlands, reaching down into the early middle ages. That Dutchman’s Farm is a cottage industry the whole family works in and feels proud of.

GOUDA CHEESE IS OUR SPECIALTY
It is a natural Farmstead cheese, made from unpasteurized milk, which allows for a richer, full-bodied flavour to develop.
